A response to TD6 - Favorite Irish Song
This is a reply to Courtney and MJ’s Throwdown #6, Favorite Irish Song.
I love Ireland. Good beer, green grass, and dark-haired beauties with lilting accents. What’s not to love? And if that’s not enough, there’s an entire pub culture that’s been faithfully (or sometimes crassly) replicated the world over. Pick any world capital, and you’ll be able to find an Irish pub, staffed by an Irish bar tender, and at least one lovely lass serving tables.
Irish music is much the same. Be it the ubiquity of U2 or the timelessness of Van Morrison, the Irish have made their mark on popular music the world over. But what’s my favorite Irish song? That’s like picking my favorite beer — there’s a right beer for any occasion, and a goodly number could lay claim to being my favorite. Let’s explore…
Rock.
This might be the easiest one. The biggest band in the world nails it down with ease
Alternative
If you were alive in the 90s, you had an opinion about the “shoegaze” bands that were popular. Ride, Slowdive, all those bands of moppy-headed, mopey UK rockers that played fuzzed out guitar riffs whilst staring at their shoes. But the progenitors of that sound, the kings of distortion, were from the Emerald Isle.
Traditional
I’m ending with this one because, when the chips are down, the gun is to my head, and the cliche is at its maximum, this is my favorite Irish song. It comes not from Dublin, but the Bronx. It’s Black 47.
